Selling South Africa in Harare: the same dish, priced on both sides of the border

Tiger's Milk, La Parada, Hungry Lion and Platō have opened in Harare since 2024. What draws South African brands north, and what do they charge in Harare compared with home?

8 November 2026 · Retail, Real estate · Read the article on dotzedw.com

South African restaurant and coffee brands are opening in Harare while South Africa's grocers pull back. We set the openings against the numbers behind them: Zimbabwean visitors to South Africa, Zimbabwe's imports from South Africa, how dollarised the economy is, and the brands' own published menus on both sides of the border.

This page holds the menu comparisons dish by dish, for Tiger's Milk (its own Zimbabwe and South African menus) and La Parada (Harare against Cape Town and Johannesburg), with the exchange rates used.

What members get

  • The median price difference between Harare and South Africa for each brand, and how many dishes are cheaper in Harare
  • Every matched dish, with both prices and the rate used

How we did it

Menus: Tiger's Milk's own menu files for Zimbabwe (May 2026) and its standard South African menu (April 2026); La Parada's menus as listed on Dineplan for Harare (12 February 2026), Cape Town (undated) and Johannesburg (24 June 2025). Only dishes with the same name (and the same stated portion) on both menus are compared.

Rand converted to US dollars at the US Federal Reserve's monthly average: R16.55 (April 2026) for Tiger's Milk, R15.99 (February 2026) for Cape Town, R17.82 (June 2025) for Johannesburg.

Visitors: Statistics South Africa, Tourism 2024. Spending estimate: visitors multiplied by South African Tourism's 2024 average spend for overland visitors from Africa (our estimate). Trade: CEPII BACI via the Insights Centre.

What this cannot tell you

  • Menus are list prices: no specials, service charges or what customers actually order. Dineplan's menus are samples that may differ from the restaurant's current menu.
  • Costs are not published, so the Harare premium cannot be split into margin, rent, power, imports and tax.
  • Openings are as reported; La Parada's Harare opening date is not published.
